In September 2018 we are re-launching our brand with fresh new pack designs, you can find below all the answers to questions associated with the re-launch. We are committed to providing you with all the information you need, however if the FAQs below do not answer all of your questions, please contact our expert Careline team, who will be able to assist you.

  • What has changed with the SMA Nutrition brand?

We have a fresh new design, whilst maintaining the same trusted formula for our powders. The new modern artwork is not only a design refresh, we have also made the staging more visible, and have removed the ridges from the 800g tins to make the packs easier to read.

  • Why have you changed the packaging?

Our new packaging is simpler, smarter and easier to spot on shelf, with a new refreshed design. We have increased the size of the staging and age suitability to make it easier for you to find the appropriate product.

  • Has the powder formula changed?

Rest assured we haven’t changed our powder formulations. It’s still the same ingredients and taste. The preparations instructions and pack size are also unchanged. The retail price is set by each individual retailer at their sole discretion, however, you will be pleased to know that our recommended retail price (RRP) remains unchanged.

  • Has the liquid formula changed?

SMA® PRO Follow-on Milk and SMA® PRO First Infant Milk ready to feed liquid formulas, have a minor change to the oil composition. It still has the same vegetable oils; rapeseed, coconut sunflower and palm; however, the percentage values of each oil has changed. For more information please contact our Careline team.

  • Is the scoop still in the powder?

We always try to ensure our packaging is consumer friendly, and having the scoop out of the powder makes the product easier to use. We are pleased to say that the scoop is now out of powder for all products except SMA® Extra Hungry Infant Milk, SMA® PRO Growing Up Milk and a couple of our specialist milks, SMA® Comfort and SMA® Wysoy®. The tins have a suspension bar for storing the scoop out of powder.

  • Do the new tins have a levelling bar?

Although this is a useful feature using the back of a clean, dry knife to level off the powder is still an effective way of ensuring the correct measurement of powder. We are however, looking at bringing this feature to our packaging in the future.

  • Is the price staying the same?

The retail price of SMA® Nutrition products are set by each individual retailer at their sole discretion.  SMA® Nutrition has no influence over the retail price at which each retailer chooses to sell our products. However our recommended retail price (RRP) remains unchanged.

  • Are you changing the pack size?

There are no changes to our pack sizes when our products move to the new designed packs.

  • Are the mixing instructions the same?

Yes. There are no formulation changes to powders and no changes to the preparation instructions. Please see the instructions on each individual tin or the product pages on the website for more details.

  • Why have you changed the name of SMA® PRO Toddler Milk?

To make your shopping experience easier we have changed the name of SMA® PRO Toddler Milk to SMA® PRO Growing Up Milk to ensure consistency with other Toddler milks from 12 months.

  • Is the packaging completely recyclable?

SMA® Nutrition have always used steel tins as they offer the best product protection and protection against humidity. The steel tin is 100% recyclable, however check with your local recycling facility. The cartons and plastic lids of the tins are widely recyclable within the UK, but again check with your local recycling facility. SMA® PRO Growing up Milk 200ml comes with a plastic straw to provide you with a safe, convenient and easy-to use solution in and out of home. We recommend pushing the straw “back in the pack” as soon as the carton has been finished and before placing the carton in the correct recycling bin.

  • Why have you taken the PRO off the specials logo?

Listening to feedback from parents and healthcare professionals we are simplifying the information on the pack, to make the relevant information stand out more. For Specials in particular, the product name has been enlarged and featured more prominently, to make it easier for you to identify the right product for your baby when your look for it on shelf. The preterm range, SMA High Energy® and SMA® Anti-Reflux are still made using the same manufacturing process as before, we have just removed the ‘PRO’ from the product name.

  • Why do you have PRO on the core range?

SMA ‘PRO’ has been removed from some specialist milks in order to simplify the pack to make it easier for you to identify the right product for your baby when you look for it on shelf. Our core range includes SMA® PRO First Infant Milk stage 1, SMA® PRO Follow-on Milk stage 2 and SMA® PRO Growing Up Milk stage 3 and the product name, staging and age suitability of these products are already very prominent on pack so there was no need to remove the ‘PRO’ from the front of packs.

  • Where can I buy the new packs?

We are not removing the old packs from shelf, however we expect the new packs to start appearing from early September. For more information on where to buy visit the individual product pages on the website.

  • The powder doesn’t seem to mix as well as in the the old can – should I make it up differently?

The formula has not changed at all and therefore the preparation instructions are the same as our previous can design. Please make sure to follow thoroughly the preparation instructions of the specific product you are using (displayed on the tin or on the website on the specific product page). If you are still having problems please contact our expert Careline team.

  • Do you have post-biotics in your formula?

Postbiotics are bioactive compounds that are present in some formulas and are made through a process of fermentation. We do not add postbiotics to our milks because they are naturally made in babies tummy and there is no need for an additional supplement.

  • Why do your products contain fish oil?

The safety and quality of our products are our highest priorities in manufacturing our SMA® Nutrition infant formula.

We took the decision to include DHA (an Omega 3) from fish-oil in our formulas following years of clinical testing that showed babies given formula containing fish oil were no more likely to have reflux or any other digestive symptoms.

These tests were part of the evidence reviewed by experts on the benefits and safety of adding DHA to formula. Following this review, the decision was taken that all formulas must include DHA. This will be mandatory from 2020.

The fish oil we use is a natural ingredient that has been highly refined and purified specifically for use in infant formula. As a natural ingredient, it provides a range of different fatty acids which are all naturally present in breast milk.

Most infant formulas on sale in the UK and Ireland currently use fish oil as a source of DHA.

If you would like more information on the ingredients in our formulas, please contact our Careline team on 0800 081 81 80 or via www.smababy.ie/careline.

If you would like some advice, please contact the SMA Careline® team of experts who will be happy to help you.

  • Can I make up SMA® Nutrition feeds in advance?

We recommend preparing each feed in individual bottles as required. This reduces the risk of infection that can make your baby ill. Alternatively use our Ready to Use liquid formulations, as no preparation is required.

  • How much do I give? My baby is always hungry

On our product labels we provide a feeding guide. It is quite normal for babies to feed frequently in the early weeks. Their demand for feeding will increase in relation to their growth pattern. Your baby may be having a growth spurt, therefore the volume of feed he or she will take will increase to account for this too. Some babies do not feed little and often, every two to three hours can be perfectly normal.

However, have a chat with your health visitor if you are at all concerned about your baby’s feeding needs as every baby is different.

  • How would I know if my baby is intolerant to baby milk?

The signs of lactose intolerance or cows’ milk allergy may be immediate or delayed after feeding, and may involve symptoms regarding your baby’s digestion, skin or respiratory system. If you believe your baby is showing signs of intolerance, contact your GP for further advice.

  • I am going on holiday soon, are SMA® Nutrition products available abroad?

The majority of SMA® Nutrition products are only available in the UK and Republic of Ireland. Therefore, for the duration of your stay, you would be best advised to take enough supplies of your baby’s usual milk with you.

  • Are SMA® Nutrition products becoming Organic?

The SMA® Organic range launched in June 2018 is an addition to our existing range, providing parents with an Organic option. Our SMA® Organic formula benefits from the same baby nutrition expertise as our SMA® PRO range. The key difference is that SMA® Organic is certified organic.

  • What is the difference between SMA® PRO Follow-on Milk and SMA® PRO Growing Up milk?

Our SMA® PRO Follow-on Milk contains iron because it is specifically designed for babies from 6 months of age. At this time, baby’s natural stores of iron have depleted, so SMA® PRO Follow-on Milk is enriched with iron to help support normal cognitive development in baby’s brain.

SMA® PRO Growing Up Milk contains more vitamin D per 100ml than our SMA® PRO Follow-on Milk, as at 12 months, your little one will be consuming more iron through the foods they eat as part of their diet. Vitamin D, which helps to support normal growth and development of bones, is a hard to get nutrient in the diet. A contribution to a toddler’s dietary intake of vitamin D can come from foods such as oily fish, supplements and fortified products such as fortified breakfast cereals. SMA® PRO Growing Up Milk also contains vitamins A, C & D to help support the normal function of a child’s immune system.

Important notice

The best way to feed a baby is to breastfeed, as breast milk provides the ideal balanced diet and protection against illness for your baby and also many non-nutritional benefits for both baby and mother. We recommend that you speak to your healthcare professional when deciding on your choice of feeding your baby. Professional guidance should also be sought on the preparation for and maintenance of breastfeeding. If you do choose to breastfeed, it's important to eat a healthy, balanced diet. Infant formula is intended to replace breast milk when mothers choose not to breastfeed or if for some reason they are unable to do so. A decision not to breastfeed, or to introduce partial bottle-feeding, will reduce the supply of breast milk. If for any reason you choose not to breastfeed, do remember that such a decision can be difficult to reverse. Using infant formula also has social and financial implications which must be considered. Infant formula should always be prepared, used and stored as instructed on the label, in order to avoid risks to a baby’s health. — SMA® PRO Follow-on Milk is only suitable for babies over 6 months as part of a mixed diet. It should not be used as a substitute for breast milk during the first 6 months of life. The decision to start weaning or to use this product before 6 months, should be made only on the advice of a doctor, midwife, health visitor, public health nurse, dietitian or pharmacist, based on baby’s individual needs. — SMA® PRO Toddler Milk is suitable for young children from 1-3 years, as part of a healthy balanced diet and it is not a breast milk substitute. — SMA® Wysoy® milk-free formula is intended to meet the nutritional needs of babies and children who are intolerant to cows’ milk protein, lactose or sucrose. Soya infant formulae are not recommended for preterm babies or those with kidney problems, where medical guidance should always be sought. — These products must be used under medical supervision.SMA Staydown® is a special formula intended for the dietary management of bottle-fed babies when significant reflux (regurgitation) is a problem. It is suitable as the sole source of nutrition up to 6 months of age, and in conjunction with solid food up to 12 months of age. If the baby’s reflux does not improve within 2 weeks of starting SMA Staydown®, or if the baby fails to thrive, the family doctor should be consulted. SMA LF® is a lactose-free milk based formula for the dietary management of babies and young children who are intolerant to lactose or sucrose, or who are experiencing symptoms such as diarrhoea, tummy ache or wind caused by temporary lactose intolerance. It is suitable as the sole source of nutrition up to 6 months of age, and in conjunction with solid food up to 18 months of age. — SMA LF® is not suitable for those who are allergic to cows’ milk protein, or who suffer from galactosaemia or require a galactose free diet. — SMA High Energy® is a milk based formula for the dietary management of babies and young children with medically determined high energy requirements as identified by a healthcare professional. It is suitable as the sole source of nutrition up to 6 months of age, and in conjunction with solid food up to 18 months of age. SMA High Energy® is not intended for use with preterm babies, for whom fortified breast milk or a low birthweight formula such as SMA® PRO Gold Prem 1 is more appropriate. — SMA® Breast Milk Fortifier is a nutritional supplement designed to be added to expressed breast milk for the dietary management of feeding preterm low birthweight babies. — SMA® PRO Gold Prem 1 is a special formula intended for the dietary management of preterm and low birthweight babies who are not solely fed breast milk. — SMA® PRO Gold Prem 2 is a special catch-up formula intended for the dietary management of preterm and low birthweight babies who are not solely fed breast milk. It is a nutritionally complete formula for use on discharge from hospital or when a low birthweight formula is no longer appropriate. It is suitable for use as the sole source of nutrition up to 6 months corrected age. SMA® PRO Gold Prem 2 is not intended for use with newborn preterm babies, for whom fortified breast milk or a low birthweight formula such as SMA® PRO Gold Prem 1 is more appropriate.

Important advice to mothers

The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months of life. SMA® Nutrition fully supports this and continued breastfeeding, along with the introduction of complementary foods as advised by your healthcare professional.
