Why SMA® PRO Breast Milk Fortifier?

Specially tailored to fortify breast milk

SMA® PRO Breast Milk Fortifier is specially designed to enable preterm low birthweight babies to benefit from the advantages of breast milk, while helping to provide an adequate intake of the nutrients needed for growth and development.

Essential vitamins and minerals - iron, calcium and vitamins A & E

Babies who are born preterm low birthweight have not always had time to build their natural stores of essential vitamins and minerals prior to their early arrival so it's important they receive these nutrients.

Nutritional supplement

SMA® PRO Breast Milk Fortifier is scientifically developed to meet the specific nutritional needs of preterm low birthweight babies.

Preparing your baby's feed

Whilst this product is made under strict hygienic conditions, it is not sterile. Failure to follow instructions on preparation and storage may make your baby ill.

  • Step 2

Only prepare one feed at a time. Gently swirl the container of the expressed breast milk (EBM).

  • Step 4

Separate and add only one sachet (1g) of SMA® PRO Breast Milk Fortifier. Do not attempt to mix part of a sachet.

  • Step 5

Place cap on container, gently shake the container until the powder is fully dissolved. Feed immediately. SMA® PRO Breast Milk Fortifier can be given from a bottle or via a naso-gastric tube. Discard any milk remaining after each feed.

  • We recommend preparing each feed as required. Opened sachets should be used immediately or discarded. Use according to normal hospital procedures for handling breast milk.

  • Expressed breast milk can be frozen and fortified once thoroughly defrosted. If frozen breast milk is used, gradually defrost in refrigerator (under 4 ºC). DO NOT use a microwave oven or allow to defrost at room temperature. Ensure thorough mixing prior to feeding.

  • Regularly monitor and assess blood nutrient levels.

  • For enteral use only.

  • Do not use any other nutritional supplements to fortify breast milk unless medically indicated.

  • It may not be necessary to fortify breast milk collected less than 2 weeks post-partum, as it is particularly rich in nutrients.

Important notice

Breast milk is best for babies and breastfeeding should continue for as long as possible. This product must be used under medical supervision. SMA® PRO Breast Milk Fortifier is a nutritional supplement designed to be added to expressed breast milk for the dietary management of feeding preterm low birthweight babies.

Important advice to mothers

The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months of life. SMA® Nutrition fully supports this and continued breastfeeding, along with the introduction of complementary foods as advised by your healthcare professional.

The best way to feed a baby is to breastfeed, as breast milk provides the ideal balanced diet and protection against illness for your baby and also many non-nutritional benefits for both baby and mother. We recommend that you speak to your healthcare professional when deciding on your choice of feeding your baby. Professional guidance should also be sought on the preparation for and maintenance of breastfeeding. If you do choose to breastfeed, it's important to eat a healthy, balanced diet.
Infant formula is intended to replace breast milk when mothers choose not to breastfeed or if for some reason they are unable to do so. A decision not to breastfeed, or to introduce partial bottle-feeding, will reduce the supply of breast milk.
If for any reason you choose not to breastfeed, do remember that such a decision can be difficult to reverse. Using infant formula also has social and financial implications which must be considered. Infant formula should always be prepared, used and stored as instructed on the label, in order to avoid risks to a baby's health, as advised by your healthcare professional.
When introducing weaning foods, remember that they need to be suitable and safe, and fed appropriately to minimise any risk to your baby's health. The pages ahead and other subsequent communications we may have with you provide you with information on infant feeding and SMA® Nutrition products, including infant formula.

If you continue you will be accepting that SMA® Nutrition is supplying this information at your individual request and for educational purposes only.
